The head of Bulgaria's Investigation Service, Angel Alexandrov, who was suspended over a corruption probe, announced his resignation last week.

The top investigator declared his resignation at a meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council earlier. According to Alexandrov, his decision to quit had no relation to the corruption scandal that recently shook the centre-left government, but was a result of his willingness to preserve the institution he led.

Alexandrov was involved in the corruption scandal probe after claiming to have been physically threatened by the former Economy and Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov, who quit the government in the wake of the corruption scandal on June 2, 2007. Failing to find evidence to support Alexandrov's allegations, Bulgarian prosecutors stopped the investigation.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the state tobacco company Bulgartabac, Hristo Lachev, has accused Alexandrov of blackmailing him for $100,000 U.S. dollars month for "private purposes".

As a result of the corruption scandal, the three-party coalition government led by the socialist Sergey Stanishev will face a reshuffle in the near future.
