Illegal immigrants have become a worry for the British authorities. In the last three years, about 400 illegal immigrants were arrested by the security forces while trying to sneak into the UK through Portsmouth ferry port.
And this number of men, women and children recorded by immigration chiefs may be only the tip of the iceberg.

Several government figures show, Portsmouth has the second-highest number of illegal immigrants of any port of entry to the UK. Related authorities have already deployed more manpower in that area to reduce the trend. But probably enough steps are not taken to stop people being smuggled into Portsmouth in lorries, coaches and cars.

Security officers do not check all the vehicles as it would jam the port up. The UK government estimates that there are 570,000 illegal immigrants currently in the UK.

The flow of illegal immigrants is imposing a strain on the British society. The UK authorities feel that France on the other end of the tunnel has to take some security measures as well to solve the problem.
