He was caught when he tried to sell the PEQ to an undercover agent. He met the undercover federal agent through auction website eBay. As a supply officer aboard on a minesweeper, David Carmel, bought hundreds of items including laser-aiming devices, known as PEQs, machine-gun barrels, night vision goggles and other parts which he did not need for his vessel. Carmel told the agent in a phone conversation that he had laser-sighting devices, night vision equipment and PEQs which were never sold on the civilian market. PEQs are mounted on weapons and meant for military and law enforcement use only. Carmel served on the USS Shrike stationed in Ingleside, Texas. He was arrested on May 30 after federal weapons charges were filed against him in Wisconsin. |
