According to the poll, 75 per cent of respondents think Alberto Fujimori should be sent to Peru. Conversely, 16 per cent of respondents would return Fujimori to Japanwhere he lived in a self-imposed exile and four per cent would like to keep him in Chile. Fujimori administered the Peruvian government from 1990 to 2000 before He left office due to a series of corruption allegations made against him. The list of Fujimori’s alleged offences includes misuse of public funds, kidnapping and murder. In the early 1990s, Fujimori launched a crackdown on armed groups. A government-backed paramilitary squad known as the Colina Group was involved in two separate operations, which left 25 people dead in 1991 and 1992. After being thrown out from the power, he then settled in Japan. In November 2005, Fujimori was detained in Chile on the basis of an international warrant following his surprise arrival in Santiago from Japan the previous day. The arrest was ordered by Chilean Supreme Court Justice Orlando Alvarez upon the request of the Peruvian government. The two countries have not reached agreement on Fujimoli's fate yet. Peru is pressing for extradition, while Chile's government says its supreme court will have to rule in the matter. Chilean Supreme Court prosecutor Mónica Maldonado last week officially recommended that former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori be extradited to Peru to face charges of corruption and human rights abuses. Fujimori governed Peru from 1990 to 2000 before internal pressures forced his flight to Japan, where he famously tendered his resignation via fax. He remained in Japan for five years, taking advantage of his Japanese citizenship—something he inherited from his parents, both Japanese immigrants to Peru—to protect himself not only from requests that he be extradited to Peru, but also from two separate international arrest warrants.
